The official website of Applied Organizational Concepts, Inc., Rod Hess, President

Hi. I am Rod Hess and welcome to my site. No doubt you have been touched in some way by the economic fiasco that we are experiencing today. Unfortunately, it is the price we are paying for the “out of balance” normative cultures that were created, and often sanctioned, by leaders over the years in their organizations.

Poor academic performance and violence plague our schools. In an effort to make a profit in a highly competitive market place, businesses have down-sized, cut corners on the quality of their goods and/or services to customers, and some have utilized unethical business practices creating a culture of politics, corruption and “me-ism.” In the face of continual funding cuts and rising prices, our human service organizations struggle to meet the increasing demand for quality service delivery to their clients. In sports, coaches spend more time dealing with the increase in negative, on and off-the-field behaviors, that reflect the social “baggage” that athletes bring with them to their teams. In government, a culture of waste, corruption, cronyism, fiscal irresponsibility, political correctness and a lack of accountability, unfortunately prevail. In his perceptive brilliance, Walt Kelly identified both the cause and solution to the above problems when he said, “We have met the enemy. He is us.”

As leaders, the cultures we create in our organizations dictate “how things really happen around here.” These cultures, we know, cause organizations to fail or succeed. We live the culture every day, and despite volumes of management and/or organizational development literature and programs, we just can’t seem to get it right. So, if the culture is the real problem, the question is: how do you fix it? Normative Leadership is the missing link that provides a “how to” system that can make leaders more effective in fixing their organization’s normative culture. If “we” created the culture, then “we” can change it!

Normative Leadership is a combination of my education, experience and innovations over the past 35 years as a practioner, trainer and consultant in the field of organizational culture change. I have adapted and applied this simple, but powerful model to organizations in the fields of business, education, human services and team sports. My Normative Leadership program provides you with a comprehensive operating system comprised of solid normative concepts, people skills and a philosophy to guide the use of the powerful skills. Normative Leadership will prove to be an invaluable asset that will benefit you in both your personal and professional life. It is common sense and can be easily integrated into your leadership style and/or organization.

The economic crisis we are currently experiencing is forcing leaders to make decisions that will “change the way we do things” in the work place in order to survive. If you are experiencing this in your organization, Normative Leadership can help you to manage the change process more effectively. Or, it can help you to prepare your organization for the future by laying a solid, positive normative culture on which to build. Either way, Normative Leadership will give you an intangible edge in addressing the real “enemy” - your organization’s normative culture.

Tough times call for simple solutions. Normative Leadership will give you just that: simple skills for simply POWERFUL RESULTS!
